Younger Generation Today

Attracting and Engaging Millennials in Local Church Communities |Rajkumar Dixit

They don’t know what to do with down time; they are quickly bored and prefer full, enriched lives.

Technology has shaped their daily lives, and their worldview.

They value diversity more than any other generations.

They are very connected with their peers.

Effect of Pandemic

According to one recent study, almost 40 percent of teens report high levels of loneliness.

The Challenge

Process

“As the Holy Spirit moves upon the hearts of the children, cooperate with His work. Teach them that the Saviour is calling them, that nothing can afford Him greater joy than for them to give themselves to Him in the bloom and freshness of their years.”

Elllen G. White, Ministry of Healing p.44

Authenticity

Young adults are looking for human relationships in the church that are real, honest, and transparent.

Belonging

They want interaction and a place to call home. Lack of inclusiveness for youth in congregational life is a ticket out the backdoor.

Ask yourself:

Questions to ask

Is the once or twice a week online meet up enough to make our youth feel belong?

What is the impact of the ongoing “virtual” personal connection you have with others?

Creativity

Creativity

"Men are needed who pray to God for wisdom, and who, under the guidance of God, can put new life into the old methods of labor and can invent new plans and new methods of awakening the interest of church members and reaching the men and women of the world."

Evangelism p.105

Ask yourself:

What are the necessary training in technology you need to be able to adapt to the need of today?

How can utilize social media in ministering to our young people?

Questions to ask

Some ideas

  • Set up a dedicated blog or group for the youth to share their thoughts and pray for each other?
  • Create a space where your group could pray for the world and those impacted by this event (the poor, the marginalized, the most vulnerable)?
  • Set up up a dedicated group video meeting to talk with the youth?
  • Provide volunteer opportunities for our young people to use their creativity in ministry.

The youth today...

ARE FEARFUL

Discipling

they need reassurance.

ARE ISOLATED

they need community.

ARE LOST

they need Jesus.

They know when they are truly valued—for whomever they are. If young adults see the church as insensitive to them and their world, then they tend to feel that the church has canceled its usefulness.

They want to be trained and empowered. They prefer a “guide on the side”, rather than a “sage on the stage”.

Empower them to make disciples in relational streams, even online.
