Presented by Simran , Manreet, Jaya and Prabjot

What is a Project Approach?

The project approach is a child-centred teaching strategy that enables children to follow their interests and fascinations, while developing the independence, knowledge and thinking skills they

will need to become life-long learners.

What is a Project Approach?

Theorists

  • John Locke (1632-1704)
  • Jean- Jacques Rousseau (1712 -1778)

Tradition

Tradition

Classical Tradition

  • The classical tradition in the early learning was the theory which was very common prior to the first world war.
  • The Reggio Emilia Approach is innovative and inspiring approach to early childhood education, which value the child as strong, capable, rich with deep curiosity and potential and this innate curiosity drives there interst to understand there world and there place within it.
  • The aim of the Reggio Emilia Approach is to teach how to use symbolic language. Eg, Painting and drama in everyday life.

Modern tradition

  • In early learning the theories that evolved after the first world war comes under modern tradition
  • Modern tradition balance their academics and their theorist theories that how children learn in different ways.
  • Project approach is using their theorist theory when the educators ask what children want to learn and their academics they implement what the children already know.

Gardner

Gardner

Post modern Tradition

  • It is the approach that explores multiple theory and perspectives about early learning.
  • Post modern tradition lies under the project approach as from the second phase of project approach it is clear that children investigates and research the topic and representing what they have learned in multiple ways.

The ideological and philosophical underpinnings

The ideological and philosophical underpinnings

Ideologies

Ideologies

1. Ideologies become the organizing principles and establish a new reality. (Mannheim, 1936/1959).

2. The concept of ideology refers largely to a “world-view, or collective mind set, that characterizes a population” (Fiala, 2007, p. 18)

3. More than forty years ago, Kohlberg and Mayer (1972) identified three distinct streams of educational ideology that continue to influence early learning programs today.

a) Romantic stream

b) Cultural transmission

c) The progressive stream

4. Early learning systems reflects, and are influenced by, ideology and organizational processes at the individual, group, and societal level( Fiala, 2007)

5. Utopian thinking occurs when individuals or groups break the cycle of familiar practices and establish a new reality (Mannheim, 1936/1959).

Philosophies

Philosophies

1. Definition of philosophy as “personal clarification and articulation of your educational belief and values. You define yourself by it; your practice reflects it.” (Jones and Shelton, 2011, page 66)

2. Philosophy is often used but not necessarily explained in the project of approach.

3. Philosophical approach mostly adopted by early learning professionals to programming the project of approach.

4. Early learning professionals’ philosophical approach is influenced by their beliefs about the relationship of play to learning.

5. There is three contexts for philosophy-

a) Metaphysics- what is the nature of reality?

b) Epistemology- what is the nature of knowledge?

c) Axiology- what is the nature of values?

Image of the Child

1. The image of child is socially constructed within particular contexts and further, that these constructions shape policies, provisions, and practices.

2. Basically, in simple or easy words we can say image of child start developing, right from the moment of birth, is so engaged in developing relationships with the world and intent on experiencing the world that he develops a complex system of abilities, learning strategies and ways of organising relationships.

3. Building on the image of the child is discourse and understanding the role of politics and ethics.

4. The image of child as rich citizen is based on the child potential to flourish in environment where such principles are evident.

5. Role of educator is they have to work hand in hand in order to obtain the desired goals to the learning and child development specifically in the early education.

6. Early childhood educators must implement and develop appropriate programs designed to meet children social, cultural, physical, intellectual, creative, emotional developmental needs and interest in a play – based environment.

7. Role of environment means surroundings and everything that affect an organism during its lifetime is collectively known as its environment.

8. Brain and biological development during the first years of the life, is highly influenced by an infant environment.

9. Role of educator and the role of environment is very different from other approaches because education and environment of child influence the most other approaches if the child is not perfect in education and environment he /she might struggle with other approaches also.
