Factors Affecting Photosynthesis

  • Describe what factors affect the rate of Photosynthesis

  • Name the parts of a leaf

1. What is the function of Chlorophyll in Photosynthesis?

2. What are the two gases involved in Photosynthesis? which is a reactant and which is a product?

3. How does the plant absorb water?

4. Do you think a Mushroom can Photosynthesize ? Explain.

5. Explain how the sun provides energy for both plants and animals.

Starter

What limiting factors could photosynthesis have?

We can look at what it needs for the three main limiting factors;

Factors

Carbon Dioxide

We can improve photosynthesis by increasing carbon dioxide upto a certain point. After that no higher concentration will affect the process

Light Intensity

Light is required as the energy to conduct photosynthesis, therefore the intensity can affect the rate that photosynthesis takes place, up to a limit. this is why photosynthesis doesn't happen at night.

Light Intensity

Temperature

For temperature every plant will want a different and certain temperature, being to hot or to cold will lower the rate at which photosynthesis can take place.

Questions

Answers

The Leaf

  • Large surface area
  • Thin, for easy diffusion
  • They Contain Chlorophyll

Leaves

  • They use guard cells to regulate water flow.
  • They have spaces for air.
  • They have veins to transport products

Topic

Epidermal Tissues cover the surfaces and protect them by secreting a waxy substance that waterproofs the surface of the leaf.

Palisade Mesophyll tissue contains lots of chloroplasts which carry out photosynthesis.

Spongy Mesophyll tissue have big air spaces and a large surface area to make the diffusion of gases easier.
