1. Working individually.

2. Use colour-coded annotation to categorise information about the topic. For example:

  • Yellow = Key events
  • Green = Key individuals
  • Purple = Statistics
  • Orange = Key PSAE & HIAE

3. We will have 15 minutes.

4. Afterwards, we will see a teacher sample of the annotations.

5. Then we will split into table groups and discuss the key inquiry questions from the document.

1. Working in three table groups, discuss the following inquiry questions:

  • Group 1: To what degree was it the GMD's weaknesses or the strengths of the CCP that led to Nationalist defeat in 1949?

  • Group 2: To what extent was Mao's leadership and ideology the decisive reason for the CCP's success in the Civil War?

  • Group 3: To what extent did foreign involvement in the Civil War contribute to the CCP's victory?

2. Remember to include specific supporting evidence for any claims and analyse/elaborate upon your argument.

3. We have seven minutes.

4. A spokesperson from each group will report back to the whole class.
