Important science concepts and processes

The practices used to develop scientific knowledge

Sciences contribution to our culture and society

Science applications in our lives”

(ACARA, 2016)

Science-Year 4

Science-Year 4

Content Description:

“They discuss how natural processes and human activity causes changes to the earths surface. They describe relationships that assist with the survival of living things and sequence key stages in the life cycle of a plant or animal (ACARA, 2016)”

Elaboration

“Planning and conducting, using measurement to estimate and measure the growth of a plant using metric units (ACSIS066)”

Life cycle of a green bean

Lesson Plan

Lesson Description:

Student's will be able to...

*Identify and describe the germination process of a bean plant.

*Conduct a simple science experiment and observe and record the outcome.

*Identify the basic needs of bean seeds in order to germinate.

*Measure the growth of a bean plant using standard measurement.

*Recognize that tools (rulers, etc) have specific functions (to assist in measuring, etc) to make tasks easier.

Materials

*One Bean book by Anne Rockwell

*Green bean seeds

*Potting soil

*Milk cartons

*Observation sheet

*Ruler

Materials

Pictures

Start lesson by reading the book one bean.

Follow up by going through the steps to grow a green bean plant

Hand out the materials to the students and give them the instructions for planting their green beans

Provide assistance when needed

Place the green beans in a warm spot with filtered light

Lesson plan continued

Students will check the growth of their green beans every 1-2 days, taking note of any changes, they will use rulers to keep track of the growth by noting the size either on the chart provided or using a graph over the space of 2-3 weeks.

Finish of the unit of work by rereading the book one bean and asking the students some questions.

Students will be given the option to take their plant home or to plant it in the school garden (if there is a school garden).
