T1L3: Changes in Matter

Warm-up

Warm-Up

Which of these do you think is a chemical change? Write down what you think.

Crushing a can

Burning toast

Blowing a balloon

Physical Changes

  • A physical change alters the form or appearance of matter
  • It does not make a new substance
  • Anything that goes from solid to liquid or gas counts as a physical change
  • (For example, water is still water)

Physical Changes

Physical Changes Practice

Discuss with your partners how each of these are physical changes.

Chemical Changes

  • A chemical change is a change in which new substances are created
  • They do not involve changes from a solid to liquid or gas
  • In a chemical change, atoms recombine to make new substances

Chemical Changes

Chemical Changes Practice

Discuss with your partners where you see a chemical change and where is a physical change.

Conservation of Mass

  • the conservation of mass tells us that matter cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed
  • you cannot destroy matter
  • atoms can be recombined but never completely destroyed

Conservation of Mass

Temperature and Thermal Energy

  • Temperature refers to how hot or cold something is
  • if the atoms of the object are hot, then its atoms move very fast
  • Thermal energy is the total energy of all particles that are moving in something
