Reliability of The Bible

Explained by a totally handsome man

Reliable Witness?

Whose story is this anyway?

Whose Story?

Let's ask Horus ... Mithras ... Gozer?

But there's nothing supernatural

Higher Beings?

An atheist (Carl Sagan) explains.

John 20:19-29

It happened

Fact 1:

Crucifixion

Here's some evidence

  • A crucifixion is not hard to believe in the area of Palestine 2,000 years ago. People were crucified left and right throughout the Roman Empire, rather literally.

Are we sure of the crucifixion?

  • There is a heel bone in Jerusalem from that time, and in just December 2021 was announced a similar find in England from the same time!

Evidences from history

Historical

  • We know there were many people claiming to be the Messiah since at least the Maccabean Revolt (160s BCE) until the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE.
  • We know Pilate existed from a stone discovered in Caesarea Maritima in 1961, and a copper signet ring with his name found in Herodium in 1969. (Also, Josephus and Tacitus mention him.)
  • Swoon Theory: Jesus passed out and awoke Sunday morning.

Can we trust the accounts of Jesus' death?

  • Stolen Body Theory: The disciples stole the body.

The main theories against ...

  • Hidden Body Theory: The Jews and/or Romans hid the body.

Counter-arguments

  • Hallucination Theory: The disciples suffered mass delusion from their grief (and possibly "smelling too much incense").

Then, where's the body?

How embarrassing ...

  • Jews were expecting a conquerer
  • "Victors write the story" ... and make themselves look good.

Tomb

After Supper

John 20:1-3, 19 - The disciples hide from the authorities

Matthew 26:36-46 - The disciples can't even stay awake for an hour while their Teacher prays.

Trial

Winter

Fact 2:

Despairing Disciples

Matthew 26:69-75 -

His friends gone, and his closest friend denies knowing Him.

Luke 9:51-54 -

The disciples want to destroy people. (How loving.)

Matthew 26:47-56 - When Jesus is arrested, the disciples scatter. (But not until Peter cuts off someone's ear!)

The Arrest

Matthew 16:21-22 - Jesus explains His death, and Peter says "Don't be stupid!"

John 19:26-27 -

One disicple shows up, at least.

Winter

Death

  • The disciples spent 50 days largely out of sight. (Passover, when the crucifixion happened, to Pentecost - Acts 2:1)

From Meek to Bold

  • The day of Pentecost, they begin proclaiming the risen Christ (Acts 2), to the point of calling out the religious leaders - Acts 2:22-24

Fact 3:

A New Boldness

From hiding to proclaiming

  • They were even willing to die for the truth of the resurrection while boldy proclaiming - Acts 5:17-42; 6:8-8:1
  • Toward the end of his life, Peter even stated it plainly -

2 Peter 1:16-18; 1 Peter 4:12-19

"ROAR"

Fact 4:

Converted Conspirator

From Murderer

to Follower

No so much "Saul" to "Paul"

Acts 13:9 - "But Saul, who was also called Paul ...
