The Norenberg's arrival

Chaim, Gittel, and their 2 parents were peacefully (well as peaceful as it could get where they are) living in the Łódź ghetto in their little 3 bedroom apartment. However one day the Rabi pays them a visit right before curfew. The Rabi brings along with him the Norenbergs; a small family of 4 that consists of Sophie, Bruno, and their parents Mr. and Mrs. Norenberg. They are told that the Norenbergs are now there to live with them, so now Chaim's family must figure out a room for them to stay in, figure out how to share their food rations, and make the Norenbergs feel at home. This is slightly difficult though because Chaim is suspicious of the Norenberg's sneaky son Bruno

Chaim's venture to Motl

One night after curfew Chaim and his father are lying in bed. Chaims father turns to him as asked him for help with a very important task. He wants Chaim to take his mothers engagement ring and sell it for cash so that thye can start planning to get out of the Ghetto. Chaims father is unable to do this himself because his bad cough would only draw attention to himself and he will most likely be killed. This journey requires Chaim to use his voice and do a little bit of talking even with his stutter. He manages to make the trip and back safely and negotiate with Motl to get the exact amount of money his father wanted.

Making the plans

After the disappearance of Mr. Norenberg, Chaims father decided it was time to figure out how they were going to get out of the Ghetto. He sat everyone around the dinner table to discuss the plans. He decided they should have 3 plans so that if one failed they would have back-ups. After letting the rest of the people read over the plans he told them to pack only a few necesities such as: warm clothes, and food that will not spoil on their journey.

Making the plans

Into the forest

Chaim and his family, plus whats left of the Norenbergs start to head out of the Ghetto. They make their way into a forest to get away from the Nazis eye. While in the forest they will face several hardships and they will meet new people along the way, some mean, some nice, all of them just trying to stay alive.

Into the forest

Almost out

The parents are gone now, dropped like flies, leaving the children to continue to wander with the people they've met. Getting further and further away they wonder if they will ever get out. Chaims poems are helping him get along and the paper he brought has become quite useful. They're almost there they just have a little more ways to go.

Almost out

It's over?

They have found shelter with another woman. Will they make it out of this place alive? Where will their journey end? The woman comes over and tells them hat apparently the U.S. is now over here and getting Germany to surrender. Theres no telling if this news is true but Chaim has hope. Hope is all Chaim needs.
