IN 1955 , A MASSIVE FLOOD OCCURRED IN NSW. THE HUNTER VALLEY FLOODS WERE ONE OF THE MOST DEVASTATING FLOODS IN AUSTRALIA AND IT WAS THE WORST FLOOD IN THE HUNTER VALLEY SINCE EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT. THIS FLOOD OCCURRED ABOUT 60 YEARS AGO.
THIS IS WERE THE FLOOD STARTED
THIS FLOOD WAS COURSED BY FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A SUDDEN LOCAL FLOOD TYPICALLY COURSED BY HEAVY RAIN.
A STREET IN SINGLETON WHEN THE FLOOD IS STARTING
ON THE 23 OF FEBRUARY 1955, HEAVY
RAIN POURED AND POURED. UNTIL FLOOD WATER STARTED TO FLOW INTO ROADS AND FARM LANDS.
FUN FACT: 2.1 MEGALITRES OF WATER FELL FROM THE CLOUDS .THAT'S ENOUGH TO FILL THE SYDNEY HARBOR 4 TIMES.
SADLY ON THAT DAY 14 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES.5200 HOMES WERE FLOODED AND 130 OF THEM WERE DESTROYED AND LOTS OF CATTLE DIED THAT DAY ALL OF THIS DAMAGE COASTED $2 BILLION.
THIS FLOOD WATER IS UP TO THE DUNOLLY BRIDGE IN SINGLETON
MY NAN WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND MY POP HAD LEFT SCHOOL TO DO AN APPRENTICESHIP AT THE TIME IT HAPPENED. THE RAILWAY STATION WAS FLOODED UP TO THE SIGNAL BOX, LOTS OF HOUSES WHERE FLOATING DOWN THE RIVER. THE WHOLE MAIN STREET WAS FLOODED. YOU COULDN'T EVEN SEE THE SHOPPING CENTERS BECAUSE THEY WERE COVERED WITH WATER.
THE KIDS WERE ASKED TO ASK THEIR PARENTS IF THEY CAN SHELTER ANYONE BECAUSE PEOPLE HAD BEEN EVACUATED FROM SINGLETON AND MUSWELLBROOK.
