causes

Personality is the combination of thoughts, emotions and behaviors that makes you unique. It's the way you view, understand and relate to the outside world, as well as how you see yourself. Personality forms during childhood, shaped through an interaction of inherited tendencies and environmental factors.

This disorder is typically diagnosed by a trained mental health professional, psychologist or psychiatrist because family physicians are not well trained for this diagnosis. A diagnosis is made by comparing symptoms and life history, also by using a specially designed interview and assessment tools. Personality disorders are long-standing patterns of behavior so they are often diagnosed in adulthood. A diagnosis in childhood or adolescence is uncommon because they are under constant development and personality changes.
