The ship was first built in the year 1931 and from there participated in many great adventures such as the battle of Iwa Jima, the shipping of the nuclear weapons that ended the war (WW2), and the battle of peril harbor.
¨A day that shale live in infamy¨ These were the words said to the people of our nation after the surprise attack of the ship port at peril harbor in 1941. The attack was a discernible sneak attack before a declaration of war was sent to the US by the Empire of Japan. Of the 4,500 sailors at the harbor only 2,097 survived with 19 ships being ether destroyed or damaged. Among them, there was the Indianapolis, not destroyed.
You may have heard of this battle before, it is one of the most well known battles of US history and symbolizes US strength through the image of raising the flag at mount Suribochi. The part that the Indianapolis took was the huge bombardment of the island.
In late 1945 the second great war was near its very end. The nuclear booms that would bring end to the war were near to being to shipped. The Indianapolis was to deliver the parts for the boom though the crew had no idea. They completed the task. But before they returned back a surprise was waiting for them.
After the great Indianapolis delivered The parts for the final atomic boom the great ship was sunk.
After the ship had delivered the cargo they where set to return to there base. They would never make it. They were traveling through what they thought was cleared waters however they were wrong. instead of a peaceful ride back to base they were attacked by a Japanese sub. There were 1,200 crew on board only 316 made it to be rescued.

After the tragic attack, as you would expect it caused up rower and change.
As said before sadly there were not many survivers however many of the ones who did were leaft with PTSD (post tramatic stress disorder). Oddly anofe the survivers were discoverd by acsident and the ships that helpted with the rescue were the: Aylwin III (DD-355), the Bassett (APD-73), the Cecil J. Doyle (DE-368), the Dufilho (DE-423), the French (DE-367), the Helm (DD-388), the Madison III (DD425), and the Ralph Talbot (DD-390).
despite the great tragity, the navy did have some changes over it. One of these was the polisy that no longer could a heavy class ship sail alone when leaving port for an ecstended amount of time, and another thing was to have better reconosents in the water so this never happons again.
