Three Strategies for Choosing a Topic
Did it not end up the way you though it should? If so, argue for an alternative outcome from within the simulation context (i.e. argue as if you are still playing your role).
Did the simulation help to spawn an idea for how you think your real world counterparts might act to achieve better results?
- If so, focus on a policy recommendation paper that recommends a real-world change.
Who you are addressing? Ideally, you're addressing those with the most power to enact the change, either within your own government or beyond.
With either of the above options, you should consider countering the arguments of other policy makers within your own country. If someone is arguing to address an issue using force, and you feel diplomacy is best, feel free to use this time to argue an alternative point.
Convince the policy maker you are addressing who would benefit from this recommendation (e.g. public opinion, alliances, the world, etc.) and who would not.
Explain which key issues your recommendation will address. Be sure to explain why you believe these issue(s) are the most important.
Briefly explain how the issue(s) were manifested based on the background information. Be sure to include citations.
Briefly explain how the issue(s) evolved within the simulation. Be sure to include citations.
One of the most important parts of policy analysis is determining the critical junctures, or the period of times when key decisions were made that altered the course of events.
The purpose of this section is then to focus on one or more of the critical juncture moments in the simulation.
Simulation Change
If you think the simulation events unfolded in the wrong directions, argue for which actions you would have liked to have seen instead.
Real-World Change
If you think the simulation events unfolded in the right way, argue for how the real-world policy makers might adopt this same path.
Include all options for policy changes
Determine the best option for action and the worst
Explain why you would rank the best option as such and the worst as such.
