Greenhouse effect

By: Oliver and Richard

-Greenhouse gases trap the solar heat of the earth and do not let it escape it in space.

-These gases help in maintaining temperature of earth suitable for human survival.

-Increased proportion of these gases causes extensive greenhouse effect causing global warming.

What is it?

-Carbon dioxide

-Methane

-Nitrous Oxide

-Chlorofluorocarbons

what makes up greenhouse gases?

-gases being produced as a result of burning fossil fuels last a long time

-deforestation leads to more Co2 in the atmosphere

-farming livestock increases methane in the air

-chlorofluorocarbons destroy the the ozone layer

Main causes of greenhouse gases

How did cfcs destroy the ozone layer?

Cl + O3 --> ClO + O2

ClO + O --> Cl + O2

sources of cfc's

-referigerants

-airacraft halons

-areosol sprays

The

effect

-ice melting

-rising sea levels

-rising global temperature

-species migrating to colder areas

-precipitation

-invasive species on the rise

-forest fires

-droughts

what will happen if this goes on?

-sea levels to rise

-hurricanes

-less freshwater

diseases

-changing ecosystems

Our carbon footprint

-65%

-11%

-16%

-6%

-2%

there are certain ways humans can slow down, stop or even reverse climate change. One way is to reduce greenhouse gases emissions.

The

solution

little things

Simple things can make a difference, although all of society must contribute and change their behaviors to make a beneficial impact on the environment.

Little things such as:

-using less hot water

-avoid using air conditioners

-avoid a dryer

-use light saving bulbs

-choose fuel efficient cars

-recycle at home and work

-buy locally grown foods

-avoid heavily packaged items.

reduce or repair the greenhouse effect

Ways to reduce or repair the greenhouse effect

If we stop using fossil fuels and used renewable energy sources such as:

-solar

-wind

-wave energy

-biofuels

that are friendly to our atmosphere this could help reduce our impact on the world and could help slow and eventually reverse global warming and reduce the greenhouse effect.
