Chelmno killing centers

Camp

Camps

The Chelmno is a extermination camp that was used during World War 2. The Chelmno had 2 sites just a half a mile away from each other. They were on the Ner River in western Poland, at that time it was occupied by Germans. It opened in December 1941 and ended up closing in January 1945, so it was almost open for 4 years.

Gassings

Gassings

The Chelmno was the first camp to start the gassings!! They started the gassings on December 8, 1941, hours after Pearl Harbor was struck by the Japanese! They executed their victims in 3 vans. These vans were 32.5 feet wide and 19 feet long. They approximately executed about 180000 to 360000!! There wasn't a lot of room in the camps so their victims were limited in the execution part. They used Asphyxiation, the process of being deprived of oxygen, to kill their victims. The dying would sometimes take too long so they would use a bone-crushing machine.

Who was there?

When I was told about the Holocaust, I thought it was only the Jews getting killed, but it was anyone who wasn't in Hitlers image, or who didn't trust Hitler. Gypsies, Polish Christians, and Jehovah witnesses along side jews were killed in these camps. The Nazis would say it was "protective custody" , so no one would know what they are really doing. To know who was who, the nazis made them wear different colored triangle; yellow for Jews, Catholics wore red, and the Jehovah witnesses wore purple!

How it helped!

How it helped

The Chelmno camp was an important part of the holocaust for the Germans. It was the first camp to start killing. Although it was useful for Germans, it caused a lot of deaths. This camp was the beginning of the deaths for a ton of people that were not in Hitlers liking. This camp did horrible for many people in some cases kids would be the victims. This camp caused death, destruction, and chaos. In my opinion, this camp was terrible, but according to the Germans it was very helpful.
