Why did we choose this?
We choose this topic because we are 1st year mining students, and we have found the mining methods quite interesting
We will be discussing 3 mining methods:
1- Room & Pillar
2- Caving
3- Cut & fill
- Best used on relatively flat orebodies and uses natural support (rock pillars). The orebody is mined out as completely as possible leaving ore/waste as pillars to support the back (roof).
- Dimensions of the pillars depend on factors such as the stability of the back (roof), stability of the ore, thickness of the deposit and rock stresses.

- Block caving involves undermining an ore body, allowing it to progressively collapse under its own weight. It is the underground version of open pit mining.

-Cut and fill methods excavate ore in horizontal slices, starting at the bottom of a stope and advancing upwards.
- After a slice is mucked out, the mined out area is filled with backfill. The fill supports the walls and provides a working platform for mining the next lift.
- Cut & fill is best suited for steeply dipping orebodies, irregular orebodies, or weak host rock.
Pastefill: Typically uses mine tailings with a cement binder delivered into the void by pipe.
Cement Rockfill: Uses specific waste rock sized and mixed with cement binder, usually delivered by truck.
Sandfill: Uses a mixture of sand and cement to fill in the mined out voids, also delivered by pipe.
