Imperialism & WW1

Part 2 of Thesis

2

The main cause of WW1 was Imperialism because the European nations wanted to expand their empires. WW1 started after Francis Ferdinand of Austria got assassinated by Gavrillo Princip and Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. After Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia's support of Serbia brought France into the conflict which caused Germany to declare war on Russia. The US wanted to stay neutral. Americans were divided about joining the war because there were alot of Germans living in the United States and they did not have a strong milatary. However, after Germany's submarine attacts president Wilson decided to enter the war on the side of the Allies. .

The American spirit during Imperialism/WW1 has been described as "walking the tight rope of neutrality". Imperialism is defined as the state policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other territories and peoples. World War One, also know as the Great War happened between 1914 and 1918. There were two sides, the Central Powers and the Allied Powers. The Central Powers included Germany,Turkey,Austria-Hungary. The Allies included mainly France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, from 1917, the United States.

quote

“This is a war to end all wars.” — Woodrow Wilson, 1917 originally coined by HG Wells

I think this quote has a lot of meaning because he imagines that this will be the last war for all countries for all time. Even though he wasnted to be a peacemaker and stay neutral, he was convinced that America's involvement in the war was essential to protect human freedom. He was extremely hopefull that with all of the slaughter and destruction, there would be peace and no more wars. Unfortunately, he was wrong.
