Line

Graphs

Line Graph: A graph with points connected by lines to show how something changes in value:

• as time goes by,

• or as something else changes.

The point at which the axes intersects is always (0,0).

Data points are plotted and connected by a line in a "dot-to-dot" fashion.

Bar

Charts

A Bar Graph (also called Bar Chart) is a graphical display of data using bars of different heights.

The horizontal (x) axis represents the categories.

The vertical (y) axis represents a value for those categories.

A bar graph is useful for looking at a set of data and making comparisons.

Example:

The below table shows a survey of favorite movies:

How can I represent this table using a bar chart?

Steps in drawing

a bar chart..

Process

1. Decide on a title for your graph

2. Draw the vertical and horizontal axes

3. Label the horizontal axes (Movie types)

4. Label the vertical axes (Number of persons)

5. Decide on a scale (Consider the least and greatest number shown)

6. Draw a bar chart to represent the total for each item.

Demonstrate

(1) Which movie is the most liked (modal)?

(2) Which movie was the least liked?

Romance

Drama

Movie Type

Your Turn...

Using the Bar chart, answer the following questions on the right.

(1) Which month is the modal month students made birthday?

June

Demonstrate

(2) Find the average number of students celebrating birthday each month.
