1820- The Missouri Compromise

Admitted Missouri to the country as a slave state, but Maine as a free state.

1827- New York abolishes slavery

1829

Jan. 1, 1839- William Lloyd Garrison publishes "The Liberator"

1830's

1833- The American Anti-Slavery Society was formed

1833

1837- Prominent Abolitionist, Elijah Lovejoy, is murdered by a pro-slavery mob

1837

1838- Fredrick Douglass Escapes slavery and joins the Abolitionist Movement

1838

1840- Formation of the Liberty Party

The Liberty Party was formed in efforts to widespread the abolitionist cause, but had little to no effect.

1844- John Quincy Adams repeals "Gag Rule" in Congress

1844

1846- Wilmot Proviso, prohibiting slavery in any territory taken from Mexico, is passed in the House,

but defeated in the Senate.

1847- Fredrick Douglass publishes "The North Star"

1848- Mexican Cession of western territory to the United States

1850- Comprimise of 1850

The Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished.

1852- Harriet Beecher Stowe published "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

Bleeding Kansas was a time period in which continual outbreaks happened between Pro and Anti- Slavery forces in Kansas.

1857- Dred Scott Court Decision which stated that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and

that slaves were not citizens but the property of their owners

1858- Lincoln-Douglass Debates

The Lincoln- Douglass debates were seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglass.

1859- John Brown raids the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia
