History of Badminton

History of badminton

Badminton has its origins in Ancient Europe and Asia and was first invented in India in a version called "Poona". The British Army learned the game in 1870. Then passed down in Ancient Greece and Egypt called the Battledore and Shuttlecock where two players would hit a feathered shuttlecock back and forth with tiny rackets. Badminton can be played in clubs and outdoors but it is not considered badminton because the shuttle is affected by the wind.

  • Battledore and shuttlecock was the original badminton.
  • It was played in Ancient Greece, China and India mainly by children, but also adults..
  • The battledores were the racquets. They were smaller than badminton racquets and were made by different materiels. They had rows of parchment, guts or nylon stretched across a wooden frame.
  • The aim of the game is the same as modern day badminton.

  • At least 2000 years ago, badminton was called battledore and shuttle cock.
  • This was played in Ancient Greece, China and India by children

  • Badminton is one of the many sports that an athlete competes in .
  • Badminton was first played in the 1972 summer olympics.
  • Asian countries have been a dominant winner in the events. Between 1992 and 2008, 69 out of the 76 medals were won by Asian countries.
  • The dominant countries are: China, Indonesia, Korea, Great Britain and Denmark.
  • Badminton is a televised sport.

Badminton is a fun sport and a great form of exercise but it requires fast feet, strong technique, and a cunning sense of strategy.

THE BASICS

THE BASICS

1. Always hit the center of the shuttle - the rubber rounded center every single time.

2. Hit the shuttle at the top of the racket. - it will benefit the speed and height of the shuttle.

3. Always return to the middle of the court - don't get out of position after you hit a shuttle.

4. Hit the shuttle towards the back line - makes your opponent have to shuffle backwards and hit the shuttle with a considerable amount of strength.

5. Practice your footwork- so you can be ready to return any shot.

1. stand in the right service court and serve diagonally to the opponent who stands in the opposite right service court.

2. If the shuttle successfully passes the net and lands in the opponent's service court then you score a point.

3. During the serve, the shuttle can not land in the short service line.

4. If the opponent returns the shuttle then you keep playing until the shuttle hits the ground.

5. There are some boundaries in badminton and they are in singles the singles side line and for doubles the doubles side line. If it lands outside of these lines then it is considered out.

Badminton provides many health benefits, both physical and mental.

  • Badminton increases concentration and reflexes. To be able to play badminton, fast reaction is required.
  • It helps to improve muscle strength and flexibility
  • The more you move, the more flexible you become. While playing badminton, moving fast is essential. This improves flexibility and help players gain muscle strength and endurance.
  • Playing badminton helps the growth of the cells that make up bones. It will be less easy to have fractured and broken bones.

SOCIAL

SOCIAL BENEFITS

  • Badminton can be played 1 vs 1, it can also be played 2 vs 2
  • Socially, the partners have to be able to work together really well, and get to know each other in order to win a match.
  • Playing badminton helps a person to make friends with other people of the same interest.
  • There are also a lot of badminton clubs, where players can socialize with each other, compete with each other and most importantly, have fun.

CULTURAL

CULTURAL BENEFITS

  • Badminton has brought people from different cultures together.
  • The Olympics has played a big role in this. 69 different countries have participated in badminton in the Olympics.
  • Badminton is a very popular sport in countries in Asia.
  • Indonesia's national sport is badminton, therefore badminton is an important part of their culture.
