Take a moment to consider WHY you are in this class and WHAT you believe you will learn in this class. Write your responses on your whiteboard.
You have specifically been chosen to take Advanced Reading based on your ELA FSA score, (remember, that 3 day, 2 part test?). If you have not taken FSA, you may have been placed in this class based off of past courses you have taken.
We have found that when incoming freshmen take a reading course, they are able to build skills and knowledge needed for FSA.
This course will require you to read both non-fiction and fiction texts, develop close reading skills (analyze texts), and write for extended periods of time (ESSAYS!!:) We implement the use of modules, each module requires students to read a variety of texts and respond to a writing prompt.
Please have all suppiles needed for this class by Monday. We will be spending time next week setting up your binders, so it is imperative for you to have a binder as well as the dividers.
The contact form is due Monday, August 14th.
Take a moment to consider WHY you are in this class and WHAT you believe you will learn in this class. Write your responses on your whiteboard.
All incoming freshmen will be taking English 1 Honors. We believe that ALL students, regardless of prior knowledge, should be academically challenged.
This course will ask you to read both fiction and non-fiction texts, analyze cinematic techniques in films, write both argumentative and informational essays, and perform.
With the use of Springboard, all students will be challenged in order to grow both academically and socially.
Take a moment to think about what the phrase "demonstrate self control" means to you. What does it look like or maybe even sound like? Using your whiteboard, explain to me what demonstrating self control looks like and sounds like.
Using your post-it write what it means to demonstrate self control and explain how demonstrating self control will help you to be successful in this class. (Write your name on the back of the post-it)
As you are leaving, post your post-it on the poster board and pick up a second jolly rancher.
