Protein Synthesis

Transcription

Transcription

Transfer of genetic instructions in DNA to mRNA (messenger).

  • Takes place in the nucleus
  • DNA-->RNA

Initiation

Initiation

RNA polymerase binds to the promoter and signals the DNA to begin the unwinding process.

Elongation

Elongation

RNA reads the DNA and begins building the mRNA molecule. A in DNA binds with U in RNA.

Termination

Termination

Transcription stops when it reaches a termination sequence in the gene. The mRNA detaches from the DNA. Introns must be removed before the primary transcript leaves the nucleus (Exons are coding regions and introns are non-coding).

Transcription

Translation

When a mRNA is processed to make protien

  • Takes place in the cytoplasm and ribosome
  • mRNA -> Protien

Step 1

mRNA attaches to a Ribosome after traveling through the cytoplasm.

Step 2

The anticodons on the tRNA attach to the codons on the mRNA.

Each tRNA contains one of the 20 amino acids.

Step 3

Another tRNA (with its anticodon) attaches to the mRNA.

The amino acids bond and the tRNA let go.

After

Once a stop codon has been read, the amino acids deatach from the ribosome

The amino acids then fold on themselves based on their chemical properties to form the protein's final strucute
