Moana is introduced on her home island where she is the chief's daughter. Due to the traditions of her island, she is meant to stay on the island and fulfill her duty as the chief's daughter.
Ever since Moana was a little girl, she has been drawn to the ocean. She finds the Heart of the Ocean at a young age but is not able to obtain it. Her call is later reaffirmed when the island begins to deteriorate, and she must save her home land.
Moana actually never refuses the call, but the people around her want her to reject the call. She is very much eager to get out to the water, but her family and her people have their doubts due to the previous events that happened in the ocean.
Similar to Moana, her grandmother is also drawn to the ocean. Her grandmother gives Moana the Heart of the Ocean and encourages her to restore the heart. When Moana goes through her supreme ordeal, her grandmother's spirit guides her through the hard time.
Moana physically crosses the reef that no one on her island has passed in years. She is beginning her journey to save her island.
The two main tests that Moana faces includes the fight with Kakamora, the coconuts, and Tamatoa, the crab king, who want the heart for themselves.
Moana and Maui go to restore the heart of the ocean only to be attacked by Te Ka. During the battle, Maui's hook is broken and he abandons Moana.
After Maui leaves Moana because of his broken hook , Moana is disheartened and decides that she is not worthy to be chosen by the ocean. She gives back the heart to the ocean.
After seeing her grandmother's spirit, Moana then grabs the heart and goes to return it back to Te Fiti.
Once Moana gets the heart of the ocean back, she goes to face Te Ka on her own. She has now realized that the ocean intentionally picked her out save the island.
After Maui's return to help Moana realizes that Te Ka is Te Fiti, which is where she must restore the heart of the ocean. She restores the heart, transforming Te Ka into Te Fiti.
After Te Fiti is restored, the deterioration is reversed and back to the normal state. Moana returns home and now the tribe embraces their original seafaring culture.
