ING Spelling Rules

Rule 1

When a verb ends with 'e', eliminate the 'e' and add ING.

When the verbs end with 'y' just add ING.

Examples

buy - buying

play - playing

try - trying

cry - crying

study - studying

fly - flying

If the verb ends with a consonant-vowel-consonant combination (CVC), you duplicate the last consonant and then add ING.

Examples

run - running

stop - stopping

sit - sitting

swim - swimming

cut - cutting

shop - shopping

plan - planning

Exceptions

If the verb ending with consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) has 2 or more syllables the last consonant only duplicates if the stressed syllable is the last syllable.

Examples

be•gin - beginning

for•get - forgetting

for•bid - forbidding

tra•vel - traveling

lis•ten - listening

can•cel - canceling

o•pen - opening

The letters 'w', 'x' and 'y' never duplicate

grow - growing

fix - fixing

buy - buying
