Composer Feature: Guillaume de Machaut

SUMMARY

Summary

Guillaume de Machaut was a medival french composer born in 1300. He is known for being part of the musical movement called ars nova (new art), which gave rise to secular style of songs being rondeau, virelai, and ballade. He was known for incorporating monophonic and poly harmonic tones within his music. Apart from the secular style of songs, he also composed sacred songs as well, that would typically be used in religious cathedrals.

DISCUSSION

Discussion

He is known for his works such as Messe de Nostre Dame. Messe de Nostre Dame is a polyphonic mass song composed by de machaut. In the song 4 people sing loudly in harmony, and that is all that is heard throughout the whole song along with a polyphonic melody . He devised his songs in simple, yet complex ways, as you would be able to hear the voices of the singers loud and clear, and it would be heard across the whole cathedral. he would compose various religious pieces of music across his lifespan, and it would soon become the foundation for future secular and sacred styles of music such as romantic ballads and religious songs sung by choirs at a church.

How this composer's music/contribution ties into today's eclectic musical world.

de Machaut's contribution ties into today's eclectic musical world as he was one of the first composers to use a polyphonic harmonic structure within his music. He was known for adding in chants and incorperating a new or preexisting melody within his songs. This is very much seen today, as some modern day techno music such as the song Free Tibet by Vini Vici involves, the incorperation of tibetan chants and various melodies within their song. Machaut's ideas have contributed greatly as now, artists are incorperating many different melodies throughout their songs, and in turn using that polyphonic structure as a basis for their own music.

How it ties to today's world

What makes this composer/music so memorable?

WHAT MAKES IT Memorable

Machaut's music is memorable because he was able to get the simplest sounds and turn them into a complex piece. he was a poet and a scribe in early france, and scribes were known to group their music by single movements. Religious songs would be typically grouped following the amount of times each prayer in the scriptures would have to be repeated. It soon started the basis for polyphonic settings in religious music played in cathedrals. He also influenced how artists in diffrent types of music genres can use a polyphonic structure within their music. As well as, how multiple diffrent melodies can make one complete sound, whether it was in a sacred or a secular style of music during the renaissance era.

Does it inspire other musicians/composers to take the next step and make it better? hOW SO?

Are musicians/composers inspired

It inspires other musicians/composers to take the next step and make it better as music is constantly evolving and changing. de machaut curated a polyphonic style of making music that is still used today in many different music genres. You can hear the polyphonic sounds and harmonies within a pop song, a rock song or pretty much any song that is trending today. He was versatile as he made songs in secular and sacred aspects, which shows that any musician/ composer can use any style being new or preexisting within their music and have a complete piece out of it when they put their mind to it.
