5. The human geography of Oceania

1

The human geography of Oceania

Oceania is an island continent located in the South Pacific, southeast of Asia.

There are four regions in it:

Australia and New Zealand, the Melanesian Archipelago, the Micronesian Archipelago, and the Polynesian Archipelago.

2

The human geography of Oceania

It is the smallest continent on the planet, of which about 10% belongs to New Guinea, the second largest island on the planet.

In Oceania, terrestrial spaces of very different extensions and characteristics coexist.

In addition to Australia, the continent also includes two other states of some importance: Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.

Australia and New Zealand retain their English traditions.

Of all the peoples on earth, Polynesians occupy the largest area: from Hawaii to New Zealand and from Pelaos to the Easter Islands located in the eastern Pacific off the coast of Chile.

3

Oceania is also the least populated continent.

Its population is around 40 million inhabitants, 71% of whom are descendants of European settlers, living in Australia and New Zealand.

Life expectancy is estimated at 83 years in Australia and New Zealand while Melanesia barely reaches 67 years.

The continent's birth rate is 20.8%, which corresponds to Australia, New Zealand (12.3%) and the highest (24.2%) Melanesia.

The same is true of the short-term fertility indicator: in Australia and New Zealand it is very low (1.9 children per woman) while in the rest of the regions it is above (3.0 children per woman) .

Mortality rates are low in all regions (6.1%). Infant mortality is very high in the archipelagos (reaching 44% in Melanesia) and very low in Australia and New Zealand (4%).

The average age of the population is thirty-2.8 years (the lowest is that of Melanesia with 22.3 years) and life expectancy is estimated at 74.2 years, although in Melanesia it is less (70, 7 years)

Of the fifteen cities there are more than 300,000 inhabitants, eleven are in Australia, three in New Zealand and one in Papua New Guinea.

The continent's migratory balance is positive. Australia and to a lesser extent New Zealand are the ones that receive emigrants while the migratory balance of the rest of the regions is negative
