Introduction to emergency preparedness

requirements for teachers/staff

-Complete all necessary training

-Always have attendance sheet with you

-Make sure all students are accounted for

-Stay in contact with main office

-REMAIN CALM

"shelter in place" resources and plan

this may need to occur if it is not safe or if there is not enough time to your designated area

-keep children and staff in classroom and together

-close and lock all windows and doors

-if possible, shut off the buildings utilities, such as water, gas, electric, etc.

-gather disaster supplies and bring them to the predetermined area

-seal all cracks to doors and vents if possible with duct tape or plastic sheeting

-make sure everyone is accounted for

-contact the center's emergency contact and inform them of the situation, as well as a list of those present

-wait for further instructions and remain in shelter in place until safe

-call 911 immediately

-REMAIN CALM

-have first aid kit easily accessible

-make sure all students and staff are accounted for

-wait to leave your classroom until safe to do so

Emergency- is a sudden, urgent, unexpected event requiring immediate action, usually requiring help

caring for children w special needs during an emergency

Child care centers/homes may have children with disabilities or chronic medical conditions.

Considerations for these children should be included in all disaster plans and procedures.

-ensure that all medication needed is present

-evaluate the food to ensure it does not have any conflicts with the child's allergies

-ensure all equipment, inculding safety transportation is accesable

-during and after an event, ensure age/developmentally appropriate language is used when providing care, comfort and addressing the mental health needs of the child

-ensure all staff members have a personal

emergency plan

-ensure all escape routes are designated

-teach children using developmentally appropriate language

-prepare an emergency supplies kit

-create a checklist to ensure you have everything if a disaster does happen
