An essay is a focused piece of writing that develops an argument or narrative
based on evidence, analysis and interpretation. There are many types of
essays you may write as a student.
While there are different types of essays, (comparison/contrast, descriptive,
persuasive, etc.), there is one standard format. Every good essay has three
basic parts: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
1. Attention Grabber
2. Background/Discussion of the Topic
3. Introduction of the Focus, Issue or Problem
4. Thesis Statement
***Four Elements have been outlined here, but this DOES not mean there is a
FOUR sentence limit for the introduction.
(In most standard essays, there are at least 3 body paragraphs.)
***Analysis, Evaluation, and Synthesis should be a part of this section.
1. Topic Sentence (should connects to the thesis)
2. Supporting Details (and explanation)—Do not quote or paraphrase without adding citations.
3. Wrap-Up sentence—This sentence should not introduce the next paragraph. This sentence should effectively wrap up the section you are completing.

2. Summarize your major points
3. Add final thoughts about the topic
4. Leave the reader with something to think about
