Erosion in Isla Vista, CA

Isla Vista

March 1980s

The erosion started

Overview

In Isla Vista they are having an erosion problem. Houses on the coast are getting swiped away piece by piece, every time chucks of sand are taking from the cliffs. Just like the North end of Jekyll Island the shore gets closer and closer to land.

January 22,2017

The cliffs collapsed and a chunk of the balcony was taken with it.

Problem

What is happening?

2

Wave erosion at the edge of the cliff and water runoff at the top, including rainfall, groundwater steps, and urban runoff.

1

Water and wind erosion are the things that are causing this.

4

The cliff is 40 feet tall, but several inches to a foot is eroded each year.

3

Water hitting the cliffs and human activities are some other reasons this is happening.

Solution

To stop the erosion in California we decided to use stiff objects that would help it slow down. We decided to use a seawall. We also have backup plans, like beach nourishment to replenish sand and palm trees to hold the sand in place.

Solution

If these solutions that are planned helps then just maybe the beach won't erode as fast. In the first pictures you can see what they looked like a long time ago and what it looks like now. We need to save Isla Vista because many people call that their home and I know it would be devastating for it to get wash away piece by piece.
