Sing to the Dawn
by Minfong Ho
Sing to the Dawn is about a Thai girl named Dawan and her struggle for equal treatment and opportunity. Dawan and her brother, Kwai, both sit for the annual scholarship exam. Everyone expects Kwai to win the award but Dawan comes in top instead while Kwai is placed second. This is the first time a girl has won the scholarship. Her father refuses to let her take the scholarship and go to the city to study. He thinks that education is not important to a girl and that Dawan should stick to her traditional place in the home. Kwai is unhappy and hopes that she will give up the scholarship for him. In spite of her parent's disapproval and her brother's resentment, Dawan holds firmly to her dream to pursue her studies in the city. She gets the support of her mother and grandmother and a few others. Her persistence pays off when her father finally gives in and lets her go.
