The Trier witch trials began because the newly appointed archbishop of Trier Johann von Schöneburg ordered prugees on nonconformant groups such as Protestants, Jews and witches. He wanted to eradicate these groups because he wanted to gain power, wealth and recognition from the catholic church which were reforming to strengthen faith by getting rid of heretics. Other reasons why the Trier witch trials started include the spanish inquisition of the 13th century, famine and plague causing depopulation, and attempts to eradicate birth control.
