Leadership Metaphor

I Am a Stream

By Lisa Richardson

As a Leader, I am a Stream

How a Stream Captures my Leadership Style:

As a leader, I am a stream flowing through the community.

I move along the ground, carving out my path, adapting to my landscape. My waters are steady and healthy. I house my school of fish and feed everything I touch. I stretch across the land and connect life outside my water to that which does not.

From the outside, you see the integrity of the stream.

  • It is strong, but not overpowering.
  • sounds are calming to those who need someone to listen
  • sounds are bubbly and invigorating to those who need encouragement.
  • can move objects in its path or move around them to incorporate them
  • always moving and changing to grow and adapt to its environment.

  • It has a consistent flow of information that is dependable.

  • It is transparent in its actions, goals, and communications.

The stream provides for growth

Inside the stream, you see how it provides

  • deposits nutrients everywhere it touches
  • nutrients of appreciation and information to staff, parents, school board members, and community donors.
  • nutrients of knowledge through staff development for teachers to pass to students

The stream knows it feeds the outside world as well as its own. It has the vision to see its connectivity.

The stream knows it feeds to outside world as well as its own

  • students will reach out to global partners in this technologically cohesive world.

  • students will become empowered through knowledge to become a community of collaborators, innovators, and problem solvers.

How a stream captures my leadership style:

  • graceful, yet strong leader with reliable moral compass
  • always evolving, growing and adapting to my environment
  • includes community outreach and vision

My personal and professional values of integrity, providing for others, and community are symbolized through the stream
