What does it mean to be free?
Freedom means being able to do whatever you want within reason. This means that you have all your basic rights and can do what you want with minimal outside interference. Of course there has to be some interference because total freedom would be a disaster.
"Ladies and Gentlemen," said the ballerina, reading the bulletin. She must have been extraordinarily beautiful, because the mask she wore was hideous. And it was easy to see that she was the strongest and most graceful of all the dancers, for her handicap bags were as big as those worn by two-hundred pound men.
And she had to apologize at once for her voice, which was a very unfair voice for a woman to use. Her voice was a warm, luminous, timeless melody. "Excuse me-" she said, and she began again, making her voice absolutely uncompetitive."
The author defines freedom in Harrison Bergeron by showing what no freedom looks like. He shows how the government controls everything that the people do and think so that everyone's the same. Readers can learn from this what to much interference with your rights can do in an exaggerated way. This connects back to my definition of freedom by showing how these people have so little basic rights that they cant even use their own voice.
”freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere.”
Franklin Roosevelt defines freedom as ”freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere.” this quote of the Four Freedoms Speech by Franklin Roosevelt relates to our meaning of freedom by saying that freedom should be for everyone because everyone deserves there basic rights and also be able to do whatever they want unless it is to harm someone or something else. Modern readers can learn many things about freedom from the speech, like how not everyone has the same rights as they do and maybe that there is a way to help people without violence and also help people without freedom. Modern readers can not only learn from this but also relate to this because there are a lot of people without freedom. Some people were born into it, while others made bad mistakes and that's what got them there, but they still deserve freedom.
“we want schools and education for every child's bright future. We will continue our journey to our destination of peace and education.”
Malala Yousafzai defines freedom as “we want schools and education for every child's bright future. We will continue our journey to our destination of peace and education.” Malala defines freedom as everyone having peace and education at any time of their lives, and how its going to help for world peace which will lead to freedom for everyone. Modern readers can learn that if we all have the right knowledge and education, we can all become at peace with each other, but if we use that education in the wrong way, it will still not be worse than the uneducated peoples plans. This quote supports our definition of freedom because freedom should be spread everywhere and not only adults, kids also because they are going to run the world in a couple years, and if they are not given the education that they deserve, then what is the point of having freedom.
"his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing."
The author defines freedom in this text by talking about the caged bird cant do what the free bird does. She talks about the free bird being able to fly and eat worms while the caged bird cant and has its wings clipped and cant even walk because its feet are tied. Modern readers can learn how people that don't have much freedom in the world might feel looking at people that do have freedom. This connects to my definition of freedom again by showing what freedom isn't. It shows how something is holding the bird which is the cage so the bird cant do what he wants like fly.
All of our texts have one thing in common. They all define freedom in their own way but at the same time in the same way. They all say that nobody should be able to restrict you too much. In Malalas speech she talks about how the government shouldn't restrict education. In Harrison Bergeron, the Harrison Bergeron represents someone who has no rights and is held back a ton. This goes on throughout all the texts we have listed. It is important to define freedom in today's world because it shows people without it what they deserve and should strive for.
