Welcome!

Please grab your journals from the front table and find the independent reading book you had yesterday OR another one from your list.

How were reading goals set?

D

  • You will be reading 270 minutes per week (150 minutes in class, 120 minutes outside of class).
  • You will be reading this amount for 9 weeks, totaling 2,430 minutes of reading.
  • Your reading rate from yesterday (the amount of pages you were able to read in 10 minutes) determined how many pages you could potentially read in the 2,430 minutes of the required reading time for this course.

Quick Write

F

  • What do you think of the reading goal that has been established for you this quarter? Is it too low? Too high?

  • You will be expected to read two hours outside of class every week.

-Are there any obstacles to you reading this much? Does it seem like a reasonable amount of time?

-What are some ways that you can find short amounts of time to read every day. (Ex. Reading while on the bus to school)

  • What are the potential benefits of reading 2,430 minutes this quarter?

Independent Reading Expectations

  • Every day in class, you will be silently reading an independent novel of your choosing.
  • As you are reading, I will be conducting 1-on-1 conferences with each of you about what you are reading/the progress you are making in your book.
  • Most days, you will be asked to journal about what you have read (prompts will be provided).
  • Every week, you are expected to read for two hours per week outside of class. (Monday is the start of a new week)
  • Every Monday, I will check to see that you have logged two hours of reading into your reading log.

*When journaling after independent reading, please always write the date (8/31/17) and the question before you respond.

What word or words would you use to describe the main character of your book so far? Give one example from the book that supports your answer, and tell HOW the example supports your answer.

Dear Ms. Brower...

  • What words would you use to describe yourself? Why do these words describe you well?
  • Tell me about your family
  • What important experiences have you had that you feel have shaped you as a person?
  • What are your goals for the next 5-10 years?
  • What is your favorite thing about school? What is your least favorite thing?
  • What are you really good at?
  • What can I do to help you succeed in this classroom?
  • Anything else you would like to share!
