The slow development of tech prior to the ‘90s meant that consumer technology was mostly limited to analogue TV and a landline phone. However, during the ’90s major technological advancements were made and technology became a staple for tasks such as communication and entertainment.
The First mobile phone was the Motorola DYNATAC 8000X. Released in 1983, this phone was most definitely a brick and barely affords the name ‘mobile’ phone. The first truly wireless, pocketable phone was the Nokia 1011 which was released in Australia during 1992. The First Text message to ever be sent was between two Vodafone technicians in 1992 and by 1993, Austrlians had access, albeit expensive, to Text messaging between two nokia GSM phones on the same network.

These technological improvements were also mirrored in the homes of Australians around the country as Home PC’s and the Film Industry discovered digital videography producing the first fully digital film in 1996 called “Windhorse”. By now most Australian homes had colour TV and over 60 free to air channels to choose from.
To start of the Century, Scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web and this created a wave of web users and a matching increase in PC sales, around this era, the most popular home PC’s, such as Apple’s PowerBook and iMac series cost around $3000 in today’s money.

Grunge: a style of rock music characterized by a raucous guitar sound and lazy vocal delivery.
The fashion associated with grunge rock, including loose, layered clothing and ripped jeans.
During the 1990's, Australia’s Fashion, Music and Pop culture were deeply influenced by America as grunge bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam entered and took over the music scene.
This was closely followed by Australians with the creation of Australian counterparts such as Silver Chair, the Vines and The Cruel Sea became popular. Similarly to Rock and Roll, the grunge genre of music came with a whole way of life, including fashion. This was also the case with hip hop which was also a popular genre at the time.
In the 1990s, Australian teenagers were often seen walking around with baggy tracksuits and bomber jackets (reminiscent of Hip Hop Artists) or Flannel Shirts, ripped jeans, doc martins, long skirts and band t-shirts (Reminiscent of Grunge culture).
On 24 September 1993 Sydney narrowly won the right to host the games, defeating Beijing by only two votes. This was a great success in the History of Australian sports and allowed the world to demonstrate the best performances from nearly 11 000 athletes.
In 1995, the Hawke Government was elected and one of their main goals was to accelerate the progress of the Olympic Venues. By the end of 1955, 15 buildings were under construction and the Homebush Bay site was under remediation.
These buildings were all completed in 1999 and opened to the public later that year.
On the 15th of Sept 2000, the Sydney Olympic Games began and it would be one of the most successful games in the History of world sports. It finished on the 1st of Oct 2000 and was an exciting welcome into the 21st century.
