If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill,
Be a scrub in the valley — but be
The best little scrub by the side of the rill;
Be a bush if you can't be a tree.
If you can't be a bush be a bit of the grass,
And some highway happier make;
If you can't be a muskie then just be a bass —
But the liveliest bass in the lake!
We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew,
There's something for all of us here,
There's big work to do, and there's lesser to do,
And the task you must do is the near.
If you can't be a highway then just be a trail,
If you can't be the sun be a star;
It isn't by size that you win or you fail —
Be the best of whatever you are!

The poem "Be the Best of Whatever You Are" is a 16 line poem with 4 lines in each stanza. The rhyme pattern is abab. For example, the word hill at the end of the first line rhymes with the word rill at the end of the third line. The rhyme pattern is repeated in all the stanzas.
The poet's tone is a motivational tone, and it teaches a message to the reader. Some poems have a more serious tone but this one is more of a motivational poem. It's not a heavy poem, but it still has a heavy message to convey.
The speaker of the poem "Be the Best of Whatever You Are" is the poet Douglas Malloch.
My poem doesn't have any metaphors or similies but it does have a lot of personification. For example:
If you can't be a highway then just be a trail,
If you can't be the sun be a star;
It isn't by size that you win or you fail
you can't be a pine on the top of the hill,
Be a scrub in the valley — but be
The best little scrub by the side of the rill;.

If you can't be a muskie then just be a bass —
But the liveliest bass in the lake.

The poem be the best of whatever you are is trying to tell you that nomatter what you are be the best of it. We should never be ashamed iof what we are. Having a job that you make the best of is better than having no job at all. in this world evry job has equal importancxe for the people.
The wonderful american poet douglas Malloch, was born on may 5, 1877 and died on july 2nd 1938. Douglas lived in musegon michigan, living in the center of lumber industry which means he is surrounded by forests and lots of trees. Beleive it or not the trees were acually his ispiration to start poetry. He became famous very quickly and was known as "the lumbermans poet". He also wrote the michigan state song.
The title of this poem "be the best of whatever you are" is an inspiration that means no matter what you can be you what you are or who you are just be the best of it because not everybody in the world has a job, so you have pick what you wanna do and be the best of it no matter what.
