The Fugitive Slave Act was conjoined with the Compromise of 1850. The Act meant that slaves must be returned to their owners. For the time this might have been viewed as somewhat normal, however this also applied to slaves in free states. It made the Federal Government responsible for finding and returning escaped slaves. This brought forward several protests which turned into rage and violence in the coming years, paving the way for the Civil War.

The Compromise of 1850 concerned slavery and territorial issues. It contained 5 new laws on these topics. As a positive, slave trade in Washington D.C. was abolished. Most of the territorial issues concerned slave states clashing with free states because of the unbalance that would be caused if California joined as a free state. This created tensions between both sides of the Civil War for the benefits the North and South collectively recieved.

In 1857, Kansas had enough people to apply for statehood within the United state. Knowing that the question wheither Kansas will be a free or slave state would come up, the pro-slavery politicians created the Lecompton constitution with the goal to protect "property" brought into Kansas. This ment that no matter if Kansas became a free or slave state, any slaves brought into Kansas would'nt be taken becasue their still considered property. The Lecompton Consititution influenced the cilvil war because it increased friction between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups. Its imporant to note that this constitution itself was more or less a louphole around owning slaves within a potential free state

The Lincoln Douglas debates were debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, since they were both running for Senate and these debates weremostly about their views on slavery. They were important because even if Lincoln failed the debate, it was very likely that he would've still became the 16th president since he talked about the morality of slavery and its issues in the united states in a way that established him as an important figure in the country. He caused anti-slavery to grow more support. This influenced the civil war because it increased the tension between the North and South. They came to one conclusion to the debates but one side wasn't ever gonna be happy about it. Especially Douglas since Lincoln winning split his Democractic party over the issues of slavery which also caused the support for republicans grow

The John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry was an effort to initiate a slave revolt in the South by taking over the United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry. However, the plan did not work since Brown and his men were caught stealing guns and were surrounded by army troops. He was brought to trial and was found guilty for trying to start a rebellion. It's important because the North saw John Brown as a hero and thought what he did was a good thing, people appreciated what Brown did but the South thought he was evil and were worried that more northerners would start slave rebellions. This influenced the Civil War because it just made it impossible for any agreement between North and South to form.

The Election of 1860 was the presidental election of 1860 between Lincoln (Republican), Breckinridge (Southern democrat), Douglas (North democrat), Bell (constitutional union). Lincoln won the election since he had more popular votes than any of the other candidates. Lincoln's views on slavery at the time of the election did not include abolition of slavery, but he didn't want slavery to extend into more territories. This influenced the civil war because the election of Lincoln was another reason for the secession of 7 southern states, since the South felt like they no longer had a voice in politics because nobody in the South voted for Lincoln.
