1-the meaning of philanthropy:
The adage "give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime" is at the heart of the difference between charity and philanthropy. Philanthropy derives from the Greek term Philanthropos, which means the love of humanity(PPhilos-llove and Anthropos-humanity or mankind)
Despite their fame, wealth, and packed schedules, many benevolent celebrities like to pay it forward by helping others - without making a big deal about it.
Entrepreneur and businessman Bill Gates (born October 28, 1955) and his partner Paul Allen founded and built the world's largest software business, Microsoft, through technological innovation, keen business strategy and aggressive business tactics. In the process, Gates became one of the richest men in the world. In February 2014, Gates announced that he was stepping down as Microsoft's chairman to focus on charitable work at his foundation, the Bill and Melinda GatesFoundation
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
In 1994, Bill and Melinda Gates established the William H. Gates Foundation, which was dedicated to supporting education, world health and investment in low-income communities. With Melinda's influence, Bill had taken an interest in becoming a civic leader in the footsteps of his mother, studying the philanthropic work of American industrial titans Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. He realized that he had an obligation to give more of his wealth to charity. In 2000, the couple combined several family foundations and made a $28 billion contribution to form the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.Gates continues to devote much of his time and energy to the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The organization tackles international and domestic issues, such as health and education and helping students in the United States become college-ready. In 2015, Gates spoke out in favor of national Common Core standards in grades K through 12 and charter schools. Gates also proved to be a groundbreaking employer when, around this time, the foundation announced that it would give its employees a year's paid leave after the birth or the adoption of a child.
2-2-1 biography
Oprah Winfrey is not just America’s only African-American billionaire. She’s also a media proprietor, a talk-show host, an actress, and a producer. She’s also a well-known philanthropist. And that’s no surprise, considering that she is considered by some to be the world’s most influential woman.
Coming from a background with significant hardships, including a single mother, rural poverty, molestation, and a teenage pregnancy (the child died shortly after birth), Oprah’s rise to fame was certainly not easy. But these days, Oprah is a self-made billionaire and the richest African-American of the 20th century.
Dedicating herself to helping others, Oprah created the Angel Network in 1998, which raised over $80,000,000 in its twelve years of operation. Since Winfrey covered all administrative costs for the program, 100% of the profits went to charitable projects and nonprofit organizations all over the world.
Oprah also operates two private philanthropies: The Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation. A big supporter of educational programs and organizations all over the world, Oprah has donated over $100 million to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy For Girls in South Africa. The foundation opened in 2007 to give academically gifted girls from impoverished backgrounds the opportunities of education and leadership. In her lifetime, she’s given a total of over $400 million.
When our favorite style mogul and musical chameleon Rihanna was just 18, her single “A Girl Like Me” made it to the Billboard top 10. But she wasn’t only getting her music on the charts. That same year, she established the Believe Foundation, which provides financial, medical, and emotional support to critically ill children.
Since then she's served as a UNICEF ambassador, helping to bring clean water to children around the world. She also established the Clara Lionel Foundation Global Scholarship Program, which financially helps students attending college in the U.S. from Caribbean countries. She also recently received recognition from Harvard for her charitable work
Charles Francis "Chuck" Feeney (born April 23, 1931)[1] is an Irish-American businessman and philanthropist and the founder of The Atlantic Philanthropies, one of the largest private foundations in the world. He made his fortune as a co-founder of the Duty Free Shoppers Group, which pioneered the concept of duty-free shopping. Feeney gave away his fortune in secret for many years, until a business dispute resulted in his identity being revealed in 1997.[2] Over the course of his life, Feeney has given away more than $8 billion.
Feeney is known for his frugality, living in a rented apartment, not owning a car or a house
Philanthropy need not, however, be the sole preserve of the very wealthy and nearly everyone can become a philanthropist by considering if they or perhaps their family could make a considered annual gift, rather than the occasional token donation we often make when we feel moved or in some way obliged to give. If we could all do this, this could indeed be philanthropy’s finest hour.
