- He attended King's College, Cambridge where he began to study mathematics.
- He later switched to physics
- He continued to neglect his studies in college
- He is said to have had nervous breakdowns because he struggled to come to terms with his sexuality

- He developed the Combined Programming Language(CPL)
- CPL is a direct ancestor to the language C that is used today.
- He also developed the concept of time-sharing in 1959

- Strachey programmed the first ever music performed by a computer, a rendition on God Save the queen
- He developed one of the first video games which was a game of checkers for the Ferranti Mark 1.
- He was instrumental in the design of the Ferranti Pegasus computer.
