What will we be learning today?

Today we will we learning about the flags of different countries, as well as what they mean. We will be learning some new vocabulary as well. We will read our book, and then, at the end of the lesson, we will have a project.

Flags of the World

Intro

Flags are used all over the world and have been used for thousands of years. Flags can look simple, like the Japanese flag, or complicated, like the former Venetian Republic flag. They can also show a simple idea, such as stop or go, or complicated ideas such as a country or religion. There are many kinds of flags.

A flag is a powerful symbol. That is why when people design a flag, they are very careful about what the put on it.

Did you know, everything on a flag is a symbol for something? The colours, the shapes and the designs on a flag all have special meanings.

Colours

Colours can all kinds of meanings. The colours of a flag are very important.

What colours do you think are good to use on a flag?

The symbols on flags also have lots of special meanings.

Most flags have designs that symbolize things like hope, freedom, peace, happiness and bravery.

Common symbols are stars, stripes and circles.

Flag Symbolism Examples:

Myanmar (Burma)

The blue color of the flag is a symbol for peace and strength. The red symbolizes courage, and the white symbolizes honor. The wheel and rice plant shows the country’s farmers and its workers.

Nigeria

The green stripe shows Nigeria’s amazing forests and its farms, the white stripe shows the longing for peace.

America

The American flag has 13 stripes that symbolize the original settlements and 50 stars which shows all the states. The red, white and blue are symbols for freedom and strength.

Vietnam

Red color shows the blood of the brave soldiers that had to fight for its freedom. The 5 points of the yellow star symbolizes the workers, soldiers, villagers, young people and scientists working together to build the country.

Please choose a flag from a country you'd like to learn about. Then, please research that flag and tell us what each part of the design is a symbol for.

I want you to design a flag! This can be a flag about yourself, or you could make a new country. You will have to write about what each part of your design symbolizes. Take a picture of your flag and send me the writing.
