Culture

From doing some more research on Spanish Mythology it is difficult to find specific answers to anything but I think that Spanish Mythology forms from Latin culture.

Culture

Celtic Mythology

Celtic mythology which is the bigger category of Spanish Mythology originates from Ireland and Scotland.

Geography

Spanish Mythology Orginated in Spain. Right next to Spain is the Mediterranean, it consists of mostly flat planes with undeveloped hills. There are also some islands around the main part of Spain that are still in Spain. Also there is lots mountains based on what i've heard.

Major Deities

The main gods in Celtic Mythology are Dagda, Lugh, Aengus. Some of the goddesses are Brigid, Danu, and The Morrigan.

Major Deities

Gods and Goddesses

Dagda is seen as a father-figure or a king; he is associated with fertility, agriculture, manliness, strength, and even magic. Lugh is the irish god of nobility; he was the master of crafts. Aengus was the irish god of poetry and love, and also youth and beauty. Danu was the female principle; she was the mother earth of celtic mythology. Brigid is the goddess of the poetic arts, crafts, prophecy, and divination; she is the same as the Greek goddess Athena. The Morrigan is the goddess of war, witchcraft, dead, protection, and retribution.

Gods and Goddesses

Important Figures

Some monsters and legends that belong within the Celtic and Spanish Mythology are one El Coco which was a myth monster who would come take kids away and eat them if they were misbehaving. This myth was told from parents to their kids. He is also known as El Cuco. Anjana who was known for her myth about how she once angered a sage who cursed her to be born as a monkey, she was a kind of female fairy spirit who would dwell near bodies of water, her name was derived from the Roman Goddess Diana.

Creation Myth

Creation

Myth

According to Celtic Mythology at first there was no time, or gods, or even people but where the sea met the land a white mare made of the sea foam was born she was Eiocha. Eiocha basically just kept having more and more kids, till eventually when they were grown up she left the island to become a sea mare again. When she went back to being a sea mare she was called Tethra goddess of the deep. The gods and goddesses created both men, women. And the animals were from the bark of oak trees. Them taking the bark from the trees upset the sea giants and it started a war between the sea giants and the gods. The paradise and land they created was completely destroyed and the sea giants were also beaten. There managed to be one man and one woman who survived this all and those were the two people who went on to create all human life.

Death Myth

When you die according to Spanish mythology you see Santa muerte which in english means our lady of the holy death who is a personification of death. She is not seen as a dead human being but is associated with healing, protection, financial wellbeing, and assurance to a path to the afterlife.

Relationships

Relationship between Humans and Gods

The relationship between humans and the gods. There were the Celts who were the people who worshiped the Celtics gods and goddesses and the way they would worship was through sacrifice. There is a myth I will talk more about later called the legend of Saint George and his Princess which has to do with the relationship between gods and humans and the sacrifices that humans made.

Purpose of Myths

The purpose of this mythology serves as any other mythology would for myths to give reasons for things that came to be whether its death or the creation of all living things. These myths in this mythology and really any mythology give a greater explanation and reason to why we have certain things that just dont make sense why there here. Like the animals we have today or even the flowers and the trees need to have a better explained greater meaning than them just showing up. So different people believed different mythology's depending on were you were born or your ancestors originated from and all of the mythology's have different beliefs and myths from creation and death that even though there different they are all kind of very similair.

Purpose of Myths

Another Myth

The Legend of Saint George and his Princess is a very well known myth in Spain. It said that many hundreds of years ago there was a dragon who lived in the Montblanc region. The villagers had to give tributes to the dragon, but eventually the villagers ran out of livestock and other things to give to the dragon. So everyone started to pick random people to sacrifice for him. It got to a point where the princess was the one to be sacrificed. Many people had offered to take her spot as princess but she refused so she had to take the responsibility since she refused to be sacrificed. The princess was sent to the dragon's dungeon but there was a knight there and fought off the dragon. He killed the dragon and out of the dragons blood grew a single rose that he gave the princess. This story has become a celebration that people in Spain celebrate every year on April 23rd and it is traditional for men to give roses to the ones they love.

Conclusion

To conclude all of the research information I found on Spanish Mythology/Celtic Mythology. I overall thought it was very intersting to learn more about a different type of mythology and I also liked seeing how the gods and goddesses from Celtic/Spanish mythology related to the Greek and Roman Mythology gods and goddesses. In both types of mythology the gods are very similair cause while doing research it would say like this god is eqalivent to this god in greek mythology.
