Fume Hood

Function of Fume hood

Function of Fume hood

  • Ventilated enclosure in which gases ,vapors and fumes are contained
  • Designed to limit exposure of hazardous or toxic fumes to workers in laboratory

General Design

General design of fume hood

  • Sash-Glass barrier that opens or closes the face of the hood
  • Baffles- Openings in the back of the hood used to maintain a uniform airflow
  • Airflow- Found along the bottom of the sash ;functions to streamline airflow into the hood
  • Exhaust Duct-Extracts the air and airborne contaminants in the hood through duct work connected to the the hood and exhaust them to the atomphesphere

Fume hood types and location at BC

Constant Airflow Volume(CAV)-

  • General purpose hood
  • Constant airflow volume is maintained
  • All air enters through sash opening
  • Airflow increase and decrease inversely proportional to opening of sash height

Biosafety Cabinet hood

  • Located in pathogen room in micro lab
  • Used with microbiological techniques
  • ClassII-recirculated air throgh the HEPA filter into laboratory

Safety Guidelines

Obstruction in hood should be minimised

  • At least 50%of work area should be clear
  • Objects in hood should be at least six inches from face of hood
  • Sash should be kept at 18 inches or less from the working surface
  • sash should be always closed when not in use
  • Use of proper personnel protection should always be used when working in ahood

Maintaenance

All hoods at BC Pennsauken are tested monthly for face velocity values with the use of a flow meter

  • Face Velocity-motion of airflow across the front of the fume hood in feet perminute(fpm)
  • OSHA Requiremnts
