THE FIRST DITCH

Dante recognizes Venedico Caccianemico. He was a pimp and admitted to selling his sister away to a lustful nobleman, as well as the mythological hero Jason, who is also in there with him.

The sinners are driven at a endless fast walk by hornered demons that give them 'great lashes.'

SECOND DITCH

This ditch is for the flatterers.

THE SECOND DITCH

Dante sees Alessio Interminelli and Thais but he and his guide simply pass on.

The sinners are not only whipped by horned demons naked, but they are also dipped in the excrement of all those in the second ditch.

SETTING

  • Surrounded by a wall of dull iron-colored stone, and the valley itself is divided into ten pouches.
  • Dark and firery place of Malebolge, which means evil pouches.

Dante's Theme/Lesson

THEME

When these sinners were alive, they led a life driven by their own corrupt purposes so in Hell they're driven by horned demons to symbolize the sinner's 'vicious natures' and their guilty conscience. Those in the first ditch sinned against those they did not know, strangers, therefore they were punished slightly less. Those who sinned against those they had a relationship with, such as friends or family, were sent to the second ditch where they were punished harder. Dante hopes to teach to live a virtuous life, free of flattery and pimping.
