Ring Tailed Lemurs

  • Ring tailed lemurs have an intricate dominance hierarchy separating central males from peripheral males and the highest ranking female from the rest
  • Males assert their dominance above other males through purring
  • Adult females show their dominance by lunging, chasing, cuffing, grabbing, and biting males (adult females are above adult males in the hierarchy)
  • When the daughter fight to find their space in the hierarchy, the mothers don’t support them

Female Gorillas

(in captivity)

Female Gorillas

  • In captivity at Howletts Wild Animal Park
  • The gorillas had access to low energy food all day, but periodically high energy food was set out in a clump
  • High status gorilla females used cough-grunt vocalizations and chased away lower status gorillas to defend the food source.
  • Low status gorillas were submissive towards the high status gorillas
  • Well-defined dominance relationships among these female gorillas.
