Factors effecting UK tourism

Ben H

Internal factors

Brexit

in the UK when the economy is doing well the pound is strong

if the economy is in recession the pound is weak. a weak pound encourages tourists to the UK and a strong pound deters visitors

current brexit issues have caused severe impact upon the british economy which effected tourism

The tourism sector has taken a positive hit from the referendum.

recession & strength of £

how brexit has effected uk tourism

Due to the pound slumping after the UK referendum vote the UK had a boom of inbound tourism as well as domestic tourism.

the amount of visitors that came from the EU increased 2.7% from the ONS however the UK gov claims that the UK tourism rates fell by 10% before the EU vote

Terror related issues

Terror

issues

when there is a terrorist attack in a country it can have an effect on that country's tourism. the effect can be people are deterd from visiting a country for a short period of time.

the UK has recently had a surge of terror related attacks which has deters people coming from inbound and domestic locations. this recent activity has reduced numbers with amid fears of people who are visiting the UK.

Merlin Entertainments said demand for day trips fell among domestic tourists after the Westminster attack on 22 March, and further after the subsequent attacks in Manchester and at London Bridge.

Recent terror attacks in the UK have affected domestic family tourism but failed to deter international visitors, as 2017 saw record tourist levels, an industry boss said that terrorism hasn't majorly effected guests coming from abroad

“The impact of recent terror attacks on our London attractions is unclear at this stage,” said Nick Varney, Merlin’s chief executive. “What is clear, however, is that London has bounced back before and will do again. I have every confidence in the longer term resilience and growth trajectory of the market

although There were 30.2 million visits to the UK from overseas in the first few months of last year, up 7 per cent on similar periods in 2016. Visit-Britain figures show. tourism still fell after recent attacks

Travel restrictions

Travel Restrictions

Travel restrictions can deter guests which heavily changes the amount of inbound tourists that the UK have every year. the rules on security, importation and immigration change every year making it harder for guests to visit. domestic visitors also face travel restrictions when going on holiday

travel restrictions effect inbound tourism as it effects what guests may bring on there holidays and what they can return with. this can also stop guests returning as people like to return with many souvenirs. having less restrictions gives guests a feel of freedom so they can be stress free when bringing souvenirs home

getting inbound guests visas to visit the UK is also very hard to receive entry without the specific visa that is required. many other guests who have european and american passports may be granted a short stay.

although security is frowned upon, having limits on certain factors can help with safety of all guests and employees whilst traveling

public aviation surveys said that over 55% of guests who travel out the UK feel inconvenienced by the extra security checks. these extra checks may be for security but cause more stress for holiday makers. this could potentially turn people off from traveling

The Weather

Weather

the weather is one of the most important factors which can affect where people go for holidays. the weather is very not important for UK tourism as the UK use London and the natural features to bring in guests. a poor summer of weather may put people off booking holidays to the uk the year after

the weather mostly effects domestic tourists as guests struggle to visit all the corners of the UK if the weather causes damages.

weather issues also effect inbound tourism as weather can also effect flights and landing procedures, guests also want to come to somewhere and also have nice weather to visit, so bad weather may get guests to look elsewhere

according to the ONS holiday business struggled to cope with the bad weather in 2016. with the cold weather and the severe flooding up north. business were set back. this caused tourism to drop as guests felt unsafe traveling to areas with bad weather. causing a loss in profits. it was reported that in the summer of 2016 tourism to the north/ south Scotland plummeted by over 9.2% to that area

competition from other destinations

TV competition

The UK needs to offer different factors which will hopefully win the tourists of inbound guests from different destinations. these factors must appeal to most guests to get more tourists

TV advertising

TV advertising is efficient when destinations are trying to get people attracted to what they see.

by posting loads of short clips and images and displaying them, it should cause many guests to want to come and stay.

stats

having TV shows/ films is a good way to show the world what the UK has to offer, having seeing these areas tourists want to visit the sets of where shows were filmed, a good example of this is out lander. Out-lander is a TV show set in Scotland and it often shows the beautiful scenery of Scotland. this scenery that was seen on the TV caused a 92% rise in tourism in June 2017 to the areas where out-lander was filmed
