Dog Inventions

1. Domestication (5000 BCE)

Dogs were first domesticated by hunter gatherers in Europe and Asia

2. Collars ( Approx. 1000 AD)

Originated in Ancient Egypt, but given practical use in Ancient Greece in which armers created spiked dog collars as a way of protecting their dogs’ throats from being ripped out by wolves.

3. Dog leashes ( Approx. 1000 AD)

In Egypt, leashes were used in training dogs to hunt and protect people

4. First Dog Show (1859)

The first show to include non-sporting breeds held in Birmingham

5. Dog Classification (1758)

Domestic dog was classified as Canis familiaris

6. Guide Dogs for the Blind (1942)

Allows students and families the ability to train dogs to help disabled individuals

Cat Inventions

1. Domestication (7500 BCE)

Cats were first domesticated during the Neolithic Era

2. Collars (Approx. 1000 AD)

Similar to dog collars, but often include a bell to warn of the cat's presence. Cat collars are smaller and thinner.

3. Cat leashes (Approx. 1000 AD)

Less frequently used on cats than dogs, and often include a harness. Leashes were intended to help an owner keep their pet within reach so they don't run away

Created by Ed Lowe who was a businessman when he gave his neighbor a type of clay to use instead of sand, which eventually evolved into what it is today

A cat Named Felix from France was the first in space

Rabbit Inventions

1. Domestication ( 600 AD)

Pope Gregory I first domesticated the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)

2. Modern Rabbit Keeping (Early 1800s)

Lop eared rabbits were first that sparked the attention of people and when they began to be used as pats rather than just resources

The first club to govern rabbit exhibitions was formed in England

4. The National Pet Stock Association (1910)

Formed in Detroit and later become the American Rabbit Breeders Association.

5. House Rabbit Society (1988)

Non-profit organization based in Richmond, California that rescues and adopts rabbits

Hamster Inventions

1. Breeding Stock (1930)

Medical researchers captured Syrian hamster breeding stock for animal testing. Further domestication led this animal to become a popular pet

2. Domestication and Breeding (1939)

Before this, researchers were not able to successfully breed and domesticate hamsters

3. "An approach to a natural history of the hamster" (1774)

Friedrich Gabriel Sulzer devoted a whole academic monograph in the domain of social sciences and natural history to hamsters,

Descendants of captive hamsters were shipped to Britain, where they came under the care of the Wellcome Bureau of Scientific Research.

Hamsters are judged based on a variety of characteristics and prizes are awarded

1. Species specification (1777)

Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben classified the domestic pig as a separate species from the wild boar

First know domestication near the Tigris Basin

3. Study over Genome Sequences (2015)

Looked at over 100 pig genome sequences to ascertain their process of domestication, which was assumed to have been initiated by humans,

5. Hog Pens (Early 1900s)

The family hog pen was a small-scale system of pig farming first found on family farms

Five healthy piglets were born in laboratories using cells from an adult pig.
