Rowan Damisch Character Development!

The beginning

The Beginning

Rowan Damisch is a typical caring/Kind hearted teenager with a best friend 'scythe enthusiast' Tyger salazar. Rowan met Tyger at the revival center he got put in after jumping off a building. Rowan lives in a big family in which he is the middle child therefore he is not very close with his family.

Gleaning of Khol whitlock

1st influence

In a society where population control is a job for trained killers (scythes), Khol whitlock was a subject of this so called gleaning (killing). Despite the the presence of Scythe Faraday (who everyone was avoiding in Rowan's high school). Rowan decides to accompany Khol so he wouldn't go through the killing alone. This influenced Rowan to become even more caring and open to assisting others when no one else offers. This trait was heavily displayed later on in the book when Rowan helped people escape during mass gleanings with Scythe Goddard. This influenced Rowan because he was not shown to be worrisome/caring to the point where he was comforting a stranger while he prepared for his death. That event also sparked Scythe Faraday's interest which then led him to choose Rowan as an apprentice scythe.

Killing Scythe Goddard

After killing the sadist, Scythe Goddard, Rowan proves how he developed form being a kind hearted person to a determined stone cold killer. After Rowan killed Goddard it was a step closer to being Scythe Lucifer. Scythe Lucifer is a name Rowan took on after setting the determination to bring justice upon the scythe community by killing all the corrupt scythe that have gone against the scythe morals.

Killing his mother

The final test for the two apprentices, in order to become a full-pledged scythe, was to kill their family. Citra, the girl Rowan loves and changed him a bit, had to kill her brother while Rowan had to kill his mother. Although they were guaranteed to be resurrected, Rowan had no hesitation to kill his mother and his excuse was because "he was never close to her". This incident proved that Rowan was becoming heartless and dedicated to his goal which is to glean all corrupt scythes. Rowan went form holding the hands of a stranger to heartlessly murdering his mother, but because of this event, which made him heartless also helped him to further stay dedicated to his goal.

To Summarize it all, in the end after killing his own mother, killing Scythe Goddard, and going through intense scythe training, Rowan developed his traits from being kindhearted and caring to a heartless and revengeful killer. The very things he vowed not to become changed as he gained more perspective on the opposing side. Rowan went from saving lives and and comforting the frightened to murdering the the corrupt scythes without showing any mercy. But, in some parts of Rowan, he has still kept some of his kind a caring trait because he believes that killing corrupt scythes will keep people safe from unnecessary death.
