Topic

“The Capitanian began on a high note, with tropical reefs and a diverse dinocephallian therapsid fauna, but quickly changed with a mass extinction. It was introduced in 1904 by George Burr Richardson, and was added to the internationally used ISC timescale in 1961. The Capitanian is relatively the oldest and most complex stage of the molluscs, which includes the ammonite stage Timorites and the conodont biozones Clarkina postbitteri hongshuiensis and Jinogondolella postserrata” (Alan Kazlev, 2002).

A causal role for marine anoxia in the Capitanian extinction has been suggested, in which mollusks replaced the brachiopods as the dominant shelly benthos. Anoxia kills benthos, but dysoxia is the likely kill mechanism in the Boreal Realm. (David P.G. Bond et al, 2019, p. 938)
