What is Rowing

The Shell

  • Rowing is a race between several crew members in a shell (or the boat)
  • Rowers sit with their backs facing the direction of movement
  • When pushing against the water with oars, a force is created that moves the boat
  • The sport ranges from an individual shell to an eight person shell with a coxswain
  • Octuples are directed by a coxswain followed by eight rowers.

  • Member who sits in the stern (the rear of the racing shell that sits at the direction facing the rowers) facing the bow
  • In charge of the boat, particularly steering and navigating

  • Uses one oar and is held with both hands

History

History

  • It was first used as a means of transport in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome
  • As time passed, many people saw it as a Sport. It had a major revival in the Middle Ages. People used the canals in Venice to race their boats
  • Interest began to increase after Oxford and Cambridge Universities began their famous rivalries on the River Thames in London in 1829
  • By the 19th Century, rowing was very popular and had been introduced to the Americas

Olympics

In the Olympics, Rowing is set into different categories for men and women.

In the lightweight category, it requires men to have an average weight of 70 kg or lighter and no rower may weigh of 72.5 kg. For women, the maximum average weight is 57 kg and no rower can weigh over 59 kg

  • US women's eight has won gold in the World Championships since 2006. In 2008, they won their first gold medal since 1984
  • At the World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland, the women's eight set a new world record. They covered a 2,000 meter course in 5:54.17. The women beat there own record from 2006 by 1 second.
