Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality

Net neutrality means users are not discriminated against based on the amount or nature of the data they transfer on the internet.

Straubhaar, Joseph. Media Now 10th Edition. Cengage Learning, 2016. pg 9

Examples

In a 2016 poll conducted by Gallup.com, it was revealed that "two-thirds of Americans don't trust or have confidence in the mass media." This statistic was highlighted in the presidential election that happened in the same year where many believed the Hilary Clinton was receiving "overly positive media attention" while Trump received far more negative feedback.

With net neutrality allowing Americans to access true and unfiltered information on their own, it indirectly affects the media industry and calls for the people to step back and question traditional news outlets.

Conglomerate

conglomerate

Conglomerates are big businesses or corporations that own seemingly unrelated holdings. They are made up of diverse parts from across several media industries and are involved in multiple areas of business activity.

National amusements is one of the 6 media conglomerates we have today and a perfect example of conglomerates influence in the media. During the 2010 election cycle, National amusements donated "more than $330,000 to political organizations." (Not just News Corp, 2010) They then play commercials and advertising promoting these political figures to try and sway the public to vote one way. These ads are inescapable as they own a majority of the media in this country.

Tim Westwood is a perfect example on the importance of the DJ. Westwood is known as the face of British rap radio as he was the first DJ to play hip-hop on the radio in the 1980's. He is single-handely responsible for bringing the hip-hop audience to mainstream radio in England.
