Effective Communication

  • As stated in the video, interprofessional communication is the cornerstone of effective collaboration.

  • All team members have a responsibility to enact interprofessional communication that is consistently authentic and develops trust with all participants.

  • Remember, respectful interprofessional communication incorporates professional transparency in all interactions with others.

  • It is also complex and multi-sensory and is much more than just what you communicate. How you communicate is just as important.

  • Always focus on using collaborative language, emphasizing "we" and "I".

Conflict Resolution

Conflict Resolution

One of the main barriers to effective collaboration and team work is unproductive conflict. Conflict is normal, and inevitable when working in teams. There are various ways to manage conflict. If you ever find yourself in a conflict, try the three step conflict response framework.

1. Cool Down- Once you detect the conflict, detach yourself from the situation, depersonalize from the conflict, and get yourself to a place where you can deal with the conflict. Try to understand others and your own emotions in the situation.

2. Slow Down- Stop to think about your goals, relations and who has the power.

3. Engage Constructively- Take account of the time, place, and manner in which you respond to conflict. Verbal and non-verbal communication skills are keys to this step.

Remember to use collaborative instead of confrontational language. Avoid presenting your conclusions as the truth, and avoid hyperboles with words like 'always' and 'never'. Spend as much time listening as speaking. Always be mindful and present.

Be proactive and forward-looking; build on guiding principles to help resolve conflicts.
